After reading "Measure What Matters" by John Doerr earlier this year and becoming convinced of the value of actionable goals, I've decided to set my 2022 goals as a creator using the Objective & Key Results method typically used in corporate environments. My main takeaways from the book were:
Set High-level Objectives
Populate each with Actionable and Measurable Key Results
Provide Complete (and loud) Transparency on progress
As outlined in my Summary of 2021 video on Youtube, my Objectives for 2022 are aligned with growing various aspects of being a creator, from increasing the amount of engagement my channel receives to building my personal repertoire of abilities as a creator. Unlike a typical OKR implementation, I cannot meet directly with stakeholders to determine the highest priority Objectives. Therefore, I've opted for Objectives that generally promote movement in a direction consistent with other successful creators of similar content.
2022 Objectives
Grow the Channel
Build my Network
Improve my Skills
Generate Revenue
Objectives state a clear goal for the year, and when each objective's Key Results are completed the Objective will be realized. Key results must be measurable and typically include numbers as well as deadlines.
Key Results
Grow the Channel
Double Subscribers to 300
Publish a video with 1,000 views in its first 90 days
Publish 15 videos
Livestream 20 times
Build my Network
Collaborate 3 times
Collaborate with somebody who I don't know today
Improve my Skills
Play all major scales on guitar in two positions
Take Ben Levin's "Blender for Musicians" course and animate one video
Generate Revenue
Attract 20 patrons on my Patreon
Nearly all the Key Results include a number. Some also have deadlines other than the implicit deadline of End of 2022. I've tried to set audacious, yet achievable goals. For example, I have two wonderful, but young and demanding kids at home. They take a lot of my time and energy 😅 I was also able to use data about my progress in 2021 to try and outdo myself in 2022. For example, in 2021 I gained 67 subscribers. In 2022 I aim to gain 150!
Now let's get to work!
